In the autumn of 2015, a young Black / African American man's life was cut short in Wichita, Kansas. David Ingram, a 23-year-old male, was fatally shot on the afternoon of October 15, 2015. The incident unfolded in a vehicle in the 1100 block of South Terrace, near Lincoln and Oliver. Ingram, in the company of his girlfriend, had arranged to sell narcotics to two men they had just picked up.
What began as a transaction quickly escalated into a tragedy.
Ingram was seated in the front passenger seat when one of the men in the backseat, later identified as Emmanuel E. Crosby, opened fire. Ingram sustained multiple gunshot wounds. Though he was rushed to Wesley Medical Center, his injuries proved fatal, and he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. The motive for the shooting was believed to be an attempted robbery.
In the hours that followed, Wichita police investigators worked swiftly to identify and locate the individuals responsible. Their efforts led them to the 7500 block of East Watson, where two suspects were taken into custody early the next morning. One of the men, Emmanuel E. Crosby, then 24 years old, was arrested on suspicion of first-degree murder. The second individual, a 25-year-old man, was also arrested, but on an unrelated outstanding warrant.
Emmanuel E. Crosby was formally charged with first-degree murder in connection with David Ingram's death. His case proceeded through the legal system, culminating in a jury trial. The evidence presented during the trial was compelling enough for the jury to find Crosby guilty on ten counts, including first-degree felony murder. Subsequently, Emmanuel E. Crosby was sentenced to life in prison, bringing a measure of closure to the violent and untimely end of David Ingram's life.
