In a tragic turn of events on a summer evening in Wichita, Kansas, a dispute over a pit bull escalated into a fatal shooting, claiming the life of 41-year-old Hispanic male, Roman Padilla. The incident unfolded on June 11, 2015, at a residence in the 500 block of South Edwards, where Padilla was shot and later died at a local hospital. His beloved companion dog, Buddy Wilson, was also shot and killed during the confrontation.
The man responsible for the shooting was identified as
32-year-old Justin Rourke. Accompanied by two other individuals, Rourke had gone to Padilla's home with the intention of retrieving a pit bull he believed to be his. An argument ensued on the front porch, during which Rourke drew a handgun and fired multiple shots. One of these shots struck Padilla in the torso. A dog that charged from the house towards the individuals on the porch was also fatally shot by Rourke.
Following the shooting, Rourke fled the scene but turned himself in to the authorities a short time later. He claimed that he acted in self-defense, stating that Padilla had threatened him and another man with a baseball bat. Initially, Rourke was charged with second-degree murder, four counts of aggravated assault, and animal cruelty, with his bond set at $500,000.
In a later development, Justin Rourke pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of involuntary manslaughter in August 2015. This plea came on the day he was scheduled for a preliminary hearing. In November 2015, a Sedgwick County District Judge sentenced Rourke to 31 months in prison for the shooting death of Roman Padilla. In addition to his prison sentence, Rourke was also ordered to pay over $12,000 in restitution.
