In the late hours of March 3, 2017, a tragedy unfolded in a duplex in Wichita, Kansas, that would cut short the life of 16-year-old Casey James Lawrukiewicz, a White/Caucasian male. Just before midnight, inside a residence in the 1700 block of South Yale, the teenager was with two acquaintances. The atmosphere, described by those involved, was one of casual recklessness, with a misguided sense of amusement that would prove fatal.
The teenager, a student at East High School, was at the
home of a 25-year-old neighbor along with 43-year-old Fabian Juan Griffin. Griffin and Lawrukiewicz were reportedly friends and had a history of engaging in pranks inspired by the television show "Jackass." On this particular night, a 9mm semi-automatic handgun became part of their ill-fated activities. Griffin later told police he believed the gun was loaded with blanks and, in a moment that would have irreversible consequences, he pointed the weapon at Lawrukiewicz and pulled the trigger. The gun, however, was loaded with a live round.
A single shot struck Lawrukiewicz in the head. The sound of the gunshot shattered the night, and emergency services were called to the scene. Paramedics rushed the young man to Wesley Medical Center, but his injury was too severe. He was pronounced dead at 1:35 a.m. on March 4, 2017. In the immediate aftermath, a distraught Griffin expressed profound remorse, reportedly telling others he was playing around and wanted to harm himself for what he had done to his friend.
Authorities arrested Fabian Juan Griffin in connection with the shooting. He was subsequently charged with second-degree murder, with prosecutors arguing that while the shooting may have been unintentional, it was the result of extreme recklessness. The legal proceedings that followed were prolonged, partly due to questions regarding Griffin's competency to stand trial. Ultimately, Griffin pleaded guilty to second-degree murder. In May 2024, more than seven years after the fatal shooting, a judge sentenced him to 12.5 years in prison for his role in the death of Casey Lawrukiewicz.
