In the early evening of July 1, 2023, the life of 17-year-old JaRon Reed, a Black/African American male, was cut short in Wichita, Kansas. A reported shooting in the 900 block of North Glendale Street prompted a response from the Wichita Police Department at approximately 6:30 p.m. Upon their arrival, officers discovered Reed with multiple gunshot wounds to his upper chest. He was unconscious and not breathing.
Despite immediate life-saving efforts by the police and the subsequent arrival of emergency medical services, JaRon Reed was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into the shooting quickly led to a person of interest. While officers were still at the scene on North Glendale, 21-year-old Tobias Love arrived at a hospital in Derby seeking treatment for a gunshot wound to his hand. Following his medical care, Love was taken into custody for questioning. The investigation revealed that Reed and Love had arranged to meet for a drug transaction. It was during this transaction that multiple shots were fired, resulting in Reed's death and Love's injury.
Tobias Love was arrested and initially charged with first-degree murder. During legal proceedings, the defense for Love claimed that he acted in self-defense during a robbery attempt. They alleged that Reed had used a female persona on Snapchat to arrange the marijuana purchase and then attempted to use counterfeit money. The defense further stated that when Love refused the sale, Reed shot him, prompting Love to return fire. In December, Love pleaded guilty to amended charges of second-degree reckless murder and distribution of marijuana. In March 2024, he was sentenced to nine years and one month in prison. As part of his sentence, he was also ordered to pay restitution for Reed's funeral costs.
