On the evening of March 2, 2026, in Wichita, Kansas, 56-year-old Darnell Guiden was fatally shot while sitting in his truck in the parking lot of an American Legion post located in the 1300 block of North Hydraulic. The incident unfolded at approximately 7:35 p.m., when officers responded to a shooting call that, unusually, was made by the suspect himself.
The man who dialed 911, identified as 40-year-old Tristan D. Miles, informed the dispatcher that he had just shot someone.
Upon their arrival, police discovered Guiden inside his 1998 Chevrolet pickup with multiple gunshot wounds. Emergency medical services were dispatched to the scene and immediately began life-saving measures. Guiden was then transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 7:57 p.m. Miles, who had a prior history with the establishment and had been previously banned, remained at the scene and was taken into custody without incident.
Investigators determined that the shooting was premeditated. According to an affidavit, surveillance footage captured Miles approaching Guiden's truck, brandishing a handgun, and firing several shots into the vehicle. The footage shows Miles firing initial shots, walking away, and then returning to fire more rounds through the windshield as Guiden attempted to close his door and reverse his truck. A total of seven shell casings were recovered from the area around and inside the vehicle.
Tristan D. Miles was subsequently booked into the Sedgwick County Jail. He has been charged with first-degree premeditated murder and criminal discharge of a firearm. The case is set to be presented to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's Office for formal prosecution. Miles is scheduled to appear in court on March 12, 2026.
