In the early morning hours of January 7, 2022, a sense of unease settled over a northeast Wichita neighborhood. The piercing sound of gunfire shattered the pre-dawn quiet, followed by the screeching of tires and the crunch of metal. When the chaos subsided, 22-year-old Hispanic male, Clemente Camarillo, was dead, the victim of a targeted act of violence that left more questions than answers.
Camarillo had been driving his SUV eastbound on 13th Street near Oliver with a 25-year-old male
passenger. It was just before 2 a.m. when another vehicle, believed to be a blue sedan, pulled alongside them. A volley of shots erupted from the sedan, striking Camarillo's vehicle multiple times. One of those bullets found its mark, fatally wounding the young driver. With its driver no longer in control, the SUV careened off the road, crashing through a fence before finally coming to a stop as it slammed into the garage of a nearby home. The passenger in Camarillo's vehicle was fortunately unharmed in the attack.
Wichita Police arrived on the scene to find a scene of destruction and tragedy. Camarillo was pronounced dead at the scene from a single gunshot wound. Investigators recovered multiple shell casings from the street, evidence of the violent encounter that had taken place. Police believe the shooting was not a random act of violence, stating that it appeared to be a targeted incident directed at the occupants of the SUV. They also indicated that it was possible the two vehicles had some sort of interaction prior to the shooting.
In the days and weeks that followed, the investigation into Clemente Camarillo's death continued, yet information about any potential suspects or arrests has not been publicly released. The motive behind the shooting remains unclear, leaving a void in the narrative of that tragic January morning. The blue sedan and its occupants seemingly vanished into the night, leaving behind a grieving family and a community searching for justice. As of now, the case remains unresolved, with no publicly identified suspects or arrests made in connection with the death of Clemente Camarillo.
