In the early morning hours of October 30, 2020, a celebration turned tragic, ending the life of 34-year-old Stephen Muriithi, a Black male from Wichita, Kansas. Muriithi was tragically shot and killed while celebrating his birthday at an apartment complex.
Wichita Police officers responded to a call of a shooting at approximately 2:15 a.m. in the 500 block of North Nims. Upon their arrival, they discovered Muriithi suffering from a gunshot wound.
Despite the officers' attempts to render life-saving aid, he succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
The investigation into the shooting revealed that a disturbance had taken place at one of the apartments, involving several individuals. This altercation reportedly stemmed from an earlier physical conflict. At some point during the dispute, a shot was fired, striking Muriithi. Authorities have stated that the shooting was not a random act of violence.
