In the evening hours of June 14, 2025, the life of 35-year-old Jesus Retana-Aguilera, a Hispanic male, was tragically cut short in Wichita, Kansas. Police were drawn to the intersection of 22nd Street and Hillside Avenue around 9:30 p.m. by the sound of gunfire. Upon their arrival, they discovered Retana-Aguilera suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
He was urgently transported to a local hospital, but tragically succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead later that evening.
The investigation into the shooting quickly led detectives to identify a suspect, 39-year-old Rosendo Camacho-Garcia. The search for Camacho-Garcia extended into the following day when officers received a crucial tip placing him at a residence in the 800 block of South Longfellow. When law enforcement arrived at the home, they found that the suspect had barricaded himself inside, initiating a tense and prolonged standoff. The Wichita Police Department's SWAT team was called to the scene to manage the volatile situation.
For approximately seven hours, crisis negotiators engaged with Camacho-Garcia, communicating in both English and Spanish in an attempt to reach a peaceful resolution. The situation escalated, however, when the suspect fired multiple shots at the SWAT officers, endangering their lives. With negotiations failing and the suspect's actions posing a continued threat, the decision was made to deploy chemical munitions into the residence to compel him to exit.
The use of the chemical agents was successful in forcing Camacho-Garcia out of the house. He was then taken into custody with the assistance of a K9 unit and was transported to a hospital for treatment of injuries sustained during his apprehension. Following his release from the hospital, Rosendo Camacho-Garcia was set to face multiple felony charges, including homicide and aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, for his role in the death of Jesus Retana-Aguilera and the subsequent standoff.
