In the late hours of a Friday night in Wichita, Kansas, a dispute in a Wendy's drive-through escalated into a fatal encounter for Pleasure T. Coleman Sr., a 35-year-old Black male. On October 14, 2022, what began as an argument over food or the wait time in the line of cars would end in a shootout that claimed his life.
Coleman, who was in the drive-through at the Wendy's located at 3601 E. Harry, reportedly became upset.
His frustration led to a confrontation with the 31-year-old man in the vehicle behind him. The argument intensified, prompting Coleman to exit his vehicle. The verbal altercation quickly turned violent as both men drew firearms and exchanged between five to seven shots.
During the exchange of gunfire, Coleman was struck in the upper body. Police were called to the scene at 11:38 p.m. and found him unconscious and not breathing. Despite life-saving efforts by the officers until emergency medical services arrived, Pleasure Coleman died at the scene. The other man involved in the shootout was taken in for questioning by the police. He was later released.
The investigation into the shooting was to be handed over to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office to determine if any charges would be filed. Both firearms used in the incident were recovered by the police at the scene.
Pleasure Coleman, born on July 3, 1987, was a father and husband. He had attended Wichita State University and Friends University, earning several degrees. He also received an HVAC certification from WTI and was employed at Spirit Aerosystems. Known as a jokester who loved to make people laugh, he was also a man who appreciated the finer things in life, from his clothes and cars to his jewelry. He is remembered by his wife, children, parents, siblings, and a host of other family members and friends.
