In the fading light of a Thursday evening, on October 23, 2025, the lively atmosphere of youth football games at Dr. Glen Day Park in northeast Wichita was shattered by the sound of gunfire. Amidst the hundreds of families gathered, 32-year-old Travon Stewart, a Black male, was the target of a fatal shooting. He was near a parking area at the park, located near 27th and Grove, where he had been selling concessions to raise funds for a football team.
An off-duty Wichita police detective,
who was working security at the event, heard the shots and quickly discovered Stewart suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to his upper body. The detective immediately began administering life-saving measures until emergency medical services arrived. Stewart was rushed to a local hospital, but tragically, he succumbed to his injuries.
Investigators have emphasized that the shooting was not a random act of violence and was specifically targeted at Stewart. They have also clarified that the incident was not connected to the youth football games taking place at the park. Despite the large number of potential witnesses, estimated to be between 200 and 300 people, law enforcement has received very few actionable tips in the days following the shooting.
In an effort to generate leads, Crime Stoppers has offered a reward of up to $5,000 for any information that leads to an arrest. The family of Travon Stewart has made public pleas for anyone with information to come forward to help bring them closure. As of now, no arrests have been made in the case, and authorities have not released any description of a suspect or suspects. The investigation remains ongoing as police continue to seek assistance from the community.
