In the early moments of a Monday morning, on July 6, 2020, the life of a young Black/African American man, 20-year-old Broderick W. Lloyd II, was tragically cut short in Wichita, Kansas. He was a passenger in a vehicle heading east on Kellogg Street when the night was shattered by the sound of gunfire. An unknown individual, or perhaps more than one, opened fire on the vehicle, striking both Lloyd and the 21-year-old man who was with him.
The assault caused the vehicle to veer off the
road, ultimately crashing beneath the Kellogg and Grove bridge. When emergency services arrived at the scene around 12:30 a.m., they discovered Lloyd inside the wrecked car, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was rushed to a local hospital, but his injuries proved to be too severe, and he succumbed to them. The other young man in the car also sustained several gunshot wounds but was transported to the hospital by a private vehicle and fortunately survived his injuries.
Despite the violent and public nature of the attack, the individuals responsible for Lloyd's death have never been identified. The Wichita Police Department has stated that they do not believe the shooting was a random act of violence, leading to the conclusion that Lloyd and his companion were likely the intended targets of the attack. However, a motive for the shooting has not been released to the public. In the years that have passed since that fatal night, no arrests have been made in connection with the homicide. The case remains unsolved, leaving a family without answers and a community with the lingering question of who was responsible for the death of Broderick W. Lloyd II. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities continue to appeal to the public for any information that might lead to a breakthrough in the case.
