In the early morning hours of June 30, 2018, Michael Ray Maxwell, a 29-year-old Black male, was found deceased in his vehicle in Wichita, Kansas. The car was parked on the street in the 1500 block of South Water when the fatal incident occurred at approximately 2 a.m. An investigation determined that an individual inside an SUV had pulled up alongside Maxwell's vehicle and fired multiple rounds, striking and killing him.
The suspect vehicle then fled the scene, heading southbound.
Authorities believe the shooting was a targeted attack and not a random act of violence. Earlier that evening, Maxwell had reportedly been involved in an altercation in the Old Town district of Wichita. However, investigators have not publicly confirmed if this earlier incident was directly related to the shooting. The police have also stated that they have received very limited cooperation from potential witnesses, which has hampered the investigation.
As of now, the death of Michael Maxwell is considered an unsolved homicide. No arrests have been made in the case, and there has been no public identification of any suspects. The Wichita Police Department's Cold Case Unit continues to list the case as open, awaiting new information that could lead to a breakthrough and provide answers for Maxwell's family and community.
