In the pre-dawn hours of Tuesday, June 3, 2025, the life of Darries Mitchell, a 33-year-old Black/African American male from Wichita, Kansas, was tragically cut short. The stillness of the early morning was broken at 3:13 a.m. when police were dispatched to a Valero gas and convenience store at 2011 E. 21st Street. Arriving officers found Mitchell inside, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
Paramedics rushed him to Wesley Medical Center, but his injuries proved fatal, and he was pronounced dead at 3:50 a.m. Initial reports from emergency dispatchers suggested the shooting occurred inside the store, with first responders being told the victim was in the bathroom.
As the city awoke, detectives began the arduous process of piecing together the events that led to the fatal shooting. The gas station, a familiar stop for many residents, became a sealed-off crime scene as investigators collected evidence and sought out witnesses to understand how a routine stop could turn so violent. The Wichita Police Department put out a call to the public for any information, urging anyone with knowledge of the shooting to come forward and contact investigators or submit an anonymous tip through Crime Stoppers.
The investigation quickly led to a significant development. On Wednesday, June 4, 2025, the day after the shooting, Wichita police announced they had made an arrest. A 59-year-old Wichita woman was taken into custody at her home in north Wichita, located just over a mile from the gas station. She was booked into the Sedgwick County Jail on suspicion of second-degree murder in connection with Darries Mitchell's death. Authorities stated that there appeared to be no connection between the suspect and Mitchell, leaving the motive for the shooting under active investigation as the case was prepared for review by the Sedgwick County District Attorney's Office.
