In the early hours of March 3, 2021, a small backyard gathering in northwest Wichita, Kansas, turned tragic, ending the life of 22-year-old Jacob Kalese. A male, Kalese had accompanied his girlfriend to the home in the 2400 block of North Sunny Lane. The evening took a dark turn when a man entered the backyard, leading to a disturbance between him and Kalese.
The altercation escalated quickly, and the man brandished a handgun, firing multiple shots at Jacob Kalese.
Officers responded to the scene at approximately 12:50 a.m. to find Kalese with several gunshot wounds. He was rushed to a local hospital but succumbed to his injuries. A neighbor recounted his wife hearing the sounds of the gunshots followed by a woman's cries for help. Upon the arrival of the police, they discovered someone administering CPR to Kalese in the partially fenced backyard.
The investigation into the fatal shooting led Wichita police to identify a suspect who was believed to be known to either the victim or other attendees of the gathering. Through their investigation, authorities pinpointed 41-year-old Michael Swinney as the individual responsible for Kalese's death. Swinney was apprehended the same afternoon at a residence in the 100 block of South Young in Wichita without any resistance.
Following his arrest, Michael Swinney, a felon with a history of convictions including aggravated assault and robbery, was charged with second-degree murder and criminal possession of a weapon. In November 2023, Swinney was sentenced to 23 months in prison for his role in the shooting. The motive for the fatal confrontation was not made clear in initial reports.
