In the early morning hours of August 14, 2022, the vibrant nightlife of Wichita's Old Town was shattered by the sound of gunfire. Deandre Greenley, a 22-year-old Black male, was in the area when the shooting occurred. At approximately 1:35 a.m., officers working in Old Town heard gunshots erupt from two different locations. They rushed to the area of 100 North Washington, where they discovered Greenley suffering from several gunshot wounds to his upper body.
Despite the immediate response, Greenley was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into Greenley's death was swift. Witnesses and footage from cameras in Old Town provided officers with a description of the suspects and their vehicle, a black 2008 Ford Edge. The suspects had reportedly walked directly up to Greenley and shot him multiple times before fleeing in the Ford Edge. Based on the information gathered, Wichita police were able to locate and arrest two individuals in connection with the fatal shooting. The suspects were identified as 21-year-old Christopher Dyas and 24-year-old Saqorea Sweeney, both from Wichita. They were taken into custody in different parts of the city.
Both Dyas and Sweeney faced legal consequences for their roles in Deandre Greenley's death. Dyas pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and aggravated assault. In May 2023, he was sentenced to 18 years in prison for his part in the shooting. Sweeney was convicted of one count of obstructing apprehension or prosecution in a bench trial in June 2023. Evidence presented showed that Sweeney was driving the car when he and Dyas left the scene after Dyas shot Greenley. Sweeney was free on bond until his sentencing, which was scheduled for July 25, 2023.
