In the late hours of December 23, 2022, a tragic event unfolded inside an apartment in the 900 block of South Mission Road in Wichita, Kansas, forever altering the lives of several families. Jose Alvarez, a 39-year-old Hispanic man known to many as "Smiley," was inside the residence when violence erupted. Just before 10 p.m., the sound of gunfire shattered the evening's calm, leading to a flurry of emergency calls to the Wichita Police Department.
When officers arrived at the scene, they discovered a chaotic and heartbreaking situation with four victims of gunshot wounds.
Outside the apartment, two individuals were found with multiple gunshot injuries. They were quickly transported to a local hospital for medical attention and were later reported to be in stable condition. However, the scene inside the apartment was far more grim. Officers found Jose Alvarez and a 22-year-old woman, Neosha Allen, unconscious and not breathing. Both had sustained multiple gunshot wounds and were pronounced dead at the scene, their lives cut short in a senseless act of violence. Friends and family remembered Alvarez as a kind man with a big heart, a good soul gone too soon.
The investigation into the double homicide began immediately, though authorities initially faced challenges as some witnesses were uncooperative. Despite these early hurdles, the Wichita Police Department's investigation pointed them toward a suspect. The pursuit of justice led them to 40-year-old Kenneth Jackson. After a brief chase, law enforcement apprehended Jackson near the intersection of 31st Street North and North Fairview Avenue.
As the legal proceedings unfolded, it was revealed that the tragic shooting stemmed from a dispute over a debt of around $50. In September 2023, Kenneth Jackson pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter for his role in the deaths of Jose Alvarez and Neosha Allen. On January 4, 2024, a judge sentenced Jackson to just over 18 years in prison, bringing a measure of closure to the grieving families and the community. The case serves as a stark reminder of how a seemingly minor dispute can escalate into a devastating act of violence, leaving a lasting impact on all those involved.
