In a tragic turn of events on June 20, 2021, Deandre Freeman, a 47-year-old Black male, lost his life in a fatal shooting in Wichita, Kansas. The incident occurred at a residence in the 1700 block of North Harding, near 17th and Oliver, where an argument escalated into violence. Freeman was shot multiple times and succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
Another man, aged 53, was also wounded in the shooting but survived after receiving medical treatment.
The investigation into Freeman's death led to a suspect, Jermall Campbell, who turned himself in to the Wichita police. Campbell was subsequently charged with first-degree murder, aggravated battery, and criminal possession of a weapon by a convicted felon. An arrest affidavit revealed that the shooting allegedly took place during an illegal dice game after an argument erupted between Campbell and Freeman. Following the altercation, Freeman was discovered on the kitchen floor with approximately a dozen gunshot wounds.
In a surprising development in April 2022, the Sedgwick County District Attorney's Office dropped the charges against Jermall Campbell. The dismissal was made "without prejudice," which allows for the possibility of charges being refiled in the future. While prosecutors did not provide specific details for this decision, Campbell's attorney stated that information uncovered by his office during their investigation led to the charges being dropped. As a result, Campbell was released from custody, and the case surrounding the death of Deandre Freeman officially remains under investigation.
