On Monday, September 1, 2025, a tragic event unfolded in the parking lot of a North Broadway liquor store in Wichita, Kansas, resulting in the death of 19-year-old Mario Gustavo. Police were dispatched to the scene at approximately 2:11 p.m. following reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, officers discovered three men with gunshot wounds. Mario Gustavo was pronounced dead at the scene.
The incident reportedly stemmed from a disturbance inside the liquor store that escalated and moved to
the parking lot. An employee of the liquor store is said to have called a male co-worker from a nearby farmers market for assistance in removing two men, one of whom was Gustavo, from the property. This led to a confrontation and ultimately, an exchange of gunfire. In the chaos that ensued, a retired Wichita police lieutenant witnessed a vehicle fleeing the scene and pursued it. This led to a traffic stop in the 800 block of North Main Street, where officers found a 17-year-old male passenger, an associate of Gustavo's, with a gunshot wound to his hand.
In connection with the fatal shooting, Wichita police arrested a 23-year-old man. The suspect, later identified from booking records as Jaime Medina, was also among those injured in the gunfight and was initially taken to a hospital in critical condition. Following his hospitalization, Medina was booked into the Sedgwick County jail on requested charges of first-degree murder and battery, with his bond set at $1,000,000. The investigation into the complex series of events remains ongoing as detectives continue to piece together the details of the deadly encounter.
