On a tragic Friday afternoon, February 5, 2021, the life of 14-year-old Hispanic male Jesus Fernandez was cut short in Wichita, Kansas. The events that led to his death began with a car chase. Fernandez was a passenger in a white Lexus that was being pursued by a black Dodge Charger. The chase concluded in a collision at the intersection of 13th and Hillside, where the Lexus crashed into another vehicle.

Following the crash, an individual exited the Dodge Charger and fired multiple shots into the Lexus where Fernandez was situated. He was struck by the gunfire and, despite the arrival of emergency services, was pronounced dead at the scene. The incident, which unfolded in broad daylight, was not a random act of violence, as investigators later determined that the victim and the suspects were known to each other.

In the days that followed, the Wichita Police Department made arrests in connection with the homicide. Jaron S. Dupuis, who was 18 at the time, was taken into custody and subsequently charged with first-degree murder. Authorities also arrested a 17-year-old male in connection to the fatal shooting. The investigation revealed that the incident was gang-related, stemming from an ongoing feud.
