On the night of March 6, 2021, a gathering in Wichita, Kansas, turned tragic, ending the life of 20-year-old Christopher Terrell Jr., a Black male. At a house in the 1000 block of North Volutsia, Terrell was with 27-year-old De'Adrian A. Johnson and a 16-year-old boy. The three were reportedly smoking marijuana and consuming Xanax bars when Johnson began to react negatively to the substances.
In his altered state, Johnson produced a handgun.
According to the teenage survivor's account to the police, Terrell engaged with Johnson before several shots were fired. Terrell collapsed on the couch, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds to his chest, groin, arm, shoulder, and leg. Johnson then turned his attention to the 16-year-old, telling him to call the police before shooting him as well. The teenager was struck by bullets in the chest and neck but managed to survive.
Following the shootings, Johnson turned the gun on himself, inflicting a gunshot wound to his own head. The injured teenager was able to call 911 for help around 11:15 p.m. When emergency services arrived, all three individuals were transported to a local hospital. Christopher Terrell Jr. succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. Johnson and the 16-year-old survived.
After being treated for his self-inflicted wound, De'Adrian Johnson was arrested and booked into the Sedgwick County Jail. He was initially charged with first-degree premeditated murder, attempted first-degree murder, and criminal possession of a weapon by a convicted felon. In July 2022, Johnson pleaded guilty to amended charges of voluntary manslaughter and aggravated battery, along with the weapons charge. In August 2022, a judge sentenced him to eight years and five months in prison for his role in the fatal shooting.
