In a tragic turn of events on October 12, 2020, 68-year-old Troy L. Harris, a male resident of Wichita, Kansas, was fatally shot. The incident unfolded around 1 p.m. at an apartment complex located in the 2700 block of South Emporia, near the intersection of Pawnee and Broadway. Troy Harris himself managed to call 911, reporting that he had been shot in the chest while visiting his younger brother's apartment.
Responding officers discovered Troy wounded in the parking lot next to a car.
He was immediately transported to a local hospital, but tragically, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. The investigation quickly revealed that a dispute had erupted between Troy and his brother, Thomas Harris, who was 61 at the time. The argument, reportedly over pain medication, escalated to a physical altercation.
During the struggle, Thomas Harris produced a handgun and fired multiple shots at his older brother. After the shooting, Thomas fled the scene on foot. However, law enforcement officials were able to identify him as the suspect and apprehended him later that same evening without any further incident. He was subsequently arrested and booked into the Sedgwick County Jail.
Initially, Thomas Harris was charged with second-degree murder and criminal possession of a firearm by a felon. As the case proceeded, he later pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of voluntary manslaughter. The plea acknowledged that the killing occurred during a sudden quarrel or in the heat of passion. Thomas Harris claimed that he had grabbed the gun to scare his brother after Troy became upset, and that the weapon discharged as they wrestled over it. He is scheduled to be sentenced for the death of his brother.
