On a summer night in Wichita, Kansas, the life of a young Black/African American man, Air Chancelor Williams, aged 20, was tragically cut short. On July 27, 2019, Williams, an Airman 1st Class stationed at McConnell Air Force Base, was attending a party at the Horizons East Apartments at 505 N. Rock Road. The gathering, intended as a celebration before an upcoming deployment, took a devastating turn in the early morning hours.
A disturbance broke out at the party, escalating from a
dispute into a violent confrontation in the apartment complex's parking lot. At approximately 2:05 a.m., a man, later identified as 25-year-old Markeithen "Red" McClaine, got out of a vehicle and fired a gun into the crowd of party-goers. The indiscriminate shooting resulted in four people being struck by bullets. When emergency crews arrived, they found Williams unresponsive in the parking lot; he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The shooting also left three other individuals injured: a 21-year-old man and a 22-year-old man were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries and later released, while a 19-year-old woman was also hospitalized but was expected to survive her wounds. Williams, who was originally from Spartanburg, South Carolina, was the sole fatality in the incident. He had joined the Air Force in August 2017 and served as an aircraft fuel systems journeyman with the 22nd Maintenance Squadron.
In the aftermath of the shooting, Wichita police quickly identified Markeithen McClaine as the suspected shooter. He was arrested the following afternoon and initially charged with first-degree murder and three counts of aggravated battery. In February 2022, McClaine pleaded guilty to amended charges of second-degree murder and three counts of attempted second-degree murder. Two months later, in April 2022, a judge sentenced McClaine to 27.5 years in prison for his role in the shooting that ended the life of Air Chancelor Williams and injured three others.
