In the early morning hours of November 10, 2024, a night out in north Wichita, Kansas, ended in tragedy for Zachary Miller, a 34-year-old Black/African American man. The incident unfolded at a bar called Tropics, located in the 2700 block of North Broadway. A disturbance that began on the patio escalated, resulting in gunfire around 2 a.m. When Wichita police officers arrived, they discovered Miller suffering from gunshot wounds to his torso and lower body.
Despite the life-saving efforts of emergency responders, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene at 2:17 a.m.
The events leading to the fatal shooting reportedly began when Miller and his girlfriend were denied entry to the bar to use the restroom after it had closed. An altercation ensued with another man, which became heated after the man allegedly used a racial slur. According to Miller's girlfriend, he was protecting her when the unidentified man fired several shots. Investigators later identified the shooter, who was taken into custody and interviewed. However, the individual was subsequently released.
In a later announcement, the Sedgwick County District Attorney stated that no charges would be filed in the death of Zachary Miller. The decision was based on there being "insufficient evidence … to overcome the self-defense claim" made by the shooter. The investigation is officially considered closed, leaving family and friends to mourn a man they remember as a loyal and caring father to his two young children. Originally from South Carolina, Miller had come to Kansas to play football, becoming an All-American defensive back at Butler Community College before playing arena football in Wichita.
