On a cold February evening in Wichita, Kansas, the life of 21-year-old Israel Norwood, a Black/African American male, was tragically cut short. On February 16, 2020, Norwood sustained a fatal gunshot wound to his body. The circumstances of the shooting were not immediately clear, but the aftermath unfolded at a local hospital, painting a grim and confusing picture for investigators.
That evening, a 2007 Chevrolet Impala pulled up to Ascension Via Christi St.
Joseph hospital carrying Israel Norwood, who was gravely wounded. Accompanying him were his two younger brothers, aged 17 and 18. Shortly after their arrival, Norwood succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. The situation at the hospital quickly grew complicated as the 18-year-old brother fled the scene on foot. He was apprehended by police officers in the vicinity shortly thereafter.
The initial stages of the investigation were met with significant challenges. Police reported that both of Norwood's brothers, as well as other family members, were uncooperative, which stalled their efforts to piece together the events that led to the fatal shooting. Despite the initial lack of cooperation, the Wichita Police Department continued their investigation into the homicide.
A break in the case came when investigators arrested Israel Norwood's 18-year-old brother, Idriys Norwood. He was taken into custody and booked into the Sedgwick County Jail on suspicion of second-degree murder in connection with his older brother's death. Authorities did not publicly release a motive for the shooting but did state that they believed the incident was not a random act of violence. Idriys Norwood was held on a $75,000 bond as the investigation continued and the case was prepared for the Sedgwick County District Attorney's Office.
