In the pre-dawn hours of Thanksgiving Day in 2016, a tragic event unfolded in a Wichita, Kansas, parking lot that would cut short the life of 15-year-old Jimmy Shopteese. The male teenager was with a 13-year-old companion at the Lost Sock II Laundromat on East Pawnee at approximately 1:45 a.m. on November 24th. What was supposed to be a meeting with people they knew took a fatal turn, according to police, when it devolved into a botched marijuana deal.
The two boys were met in the
parking lot by three other males who had arrived in a silver or gray car. An argument reportedly broke out during the transaction. It was then that one of the individuals, later identified by authorities as 24-year-old Darien L. Freeman, produced a handgun. Freeman fired a single shot, striking Jimmy in the back as he and his young friend attempted to flee the sudden violence.
Despite his severe injury, Jimmy managed to run across the street to a nearby Burger King, desperately seeking help. Emergency services were called, and he was rushed to a local hospital. Tragically, his life could not be saved, and he succumbed to the gunshot wound. The incident marked the 30th homicide of the year in Wichita, a grim milestone reached on a day meant for gratitude and family.
The investigation that followed led to the swift apprehension of two suspects. Darien L. Freeman was arrested and booked into the Sedgwick County Jail on charges of first-degree murder and criminal possession of a firearm. Alongside him, a 15-year-old male was also taken into custody and faced charges in juvenile court for first-degree murder, attempted aggravated robbery, and misdemeanor possession of marijuana. The authorities continued their search for the third individual who was present at the scene but had not yet been identified or captured.
