Star Michelle Palumbo, a 25-year-old woman, vanished in Reno, Nevada, under perplexing and troubling circumstances. About a year before she went missing, she had moved from her family's home in Tucson, Arizona, to live with her grandmother in the Reno area. In the time leading up to her disappearance, Palumbo was reportedly involved with methamphetamine, and there are indications that she may have been engaged in sex work to support her drug habit.

The events immediately preceding her disappearance are particularly unsettling. In the early hours of the morning, an officer at the Reno/Tahoe International Airport found Palumbo in a restricted area. She appeared disoriented and was possibly hallucinating, claiming she was searching for a younger sister—a sibling she did not have—who she said had run onto the tarmac. The airport officer, believing she was not a criminal threat but recognizing her disoriented state, drove her to the nearby Reno Hilton Hotel and Casino. She was last seen near the valet parking area of the hotel at approximately 1:30 a.m. but never checked in and has not been seen or heard from since. The following day, her car was discovered abandoned and illegally parked at the airport. Inside the vehicle were most of her personal belongings, including her cell phone and a purse containing $600 in cash. More disturbing were the other items found: emails addressed to the White House in which she claimed the government was trying to murder her, a dark drawing of a woman bound and gagged, and two books on how to change one's identity.
Several months after she vanished, in December of 2000, a possible sighting of Palumbo was reported at the Silver Dollar Casino in Elko, Nevada, over 250 miles from Reno. The casino's owner claimed a woman who identified herself as 'Star' seemed frightened and said she was being chased by a pimp. This woman became noticeably nervous when she saw a man looking at her through a window and quickly left with another unidentified female. This sighting, however, has never been officially confirmed. The investigation into Star Palumbo's disappearance has been fraught with conflicting information and a lack of solid leads. Theories range from her voluntarily leaving to start a new life and escape drug debts, to a drug overdose, to being a victim of foul play. Despite the passage of time, her case remains an open investigation, leaving her family with unanswered questions about what happened to her after she was dropped off at the hotel that morning.
