An evening dispute between acquaintances at an American Legion post in north Wichita tragically escalated, leaving 55-year-old Anthony Grayson, a male, dead from multiple gunshot wounds on the night of October 9, 2025. The incident, which unfolded inside American Legion Post 273 on Hydraulic Avenue, also resulted in another man being hospitalized with serious injuries.
According to Wichita police, the events began with a physical altercation between Grayson and another man inside the
bar. Following the initial fight, the suspect left the establishment and retrieved a firearm from his vehicle. Despite attempts by employees to prevent his re-entry, he forced his way back inside, where a second fight broke out. It was during this subsequent altercation that the suspect allegedly opened fire, striking Grayson and a 56-year-old man who was attempting to intervene.
Police were dispatched to the scene at approximately 7:28 p.m. and found Grayson unresponsive. He was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead at 7:55 p.m. The second victim, also suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, was taken to a hospital by a private vehicle and was reported to be in serious but stable condition.
A 52-year-old Wichita man, later identified as Daryl Buckner, was arrested at the scene. He was subsequently booked into the Sedgwick County Jail on suspicion of first-degree murder and aggravated battery. Buckner has since been formally charged with these offenses. A court order was issued to prevent him from having contact with any witnesses to the shooting. Wichita Police Chief Joe Sullivan commented on the incident, expressing frustration that an argument between friends had turned violent and resulted in a loss of life.
