On a tragic afternoon in Wichita, Kansas, 14-year-old Jalen Reed, a Black male, lost his life in a shooting incident on June 13, 2022. The event unfolded around noon at a residence in the 1900 block of South Shiloh. Jalen was in the company of a 16-year-old male at the time of the incident.
According to the Wichita Police Department, the 16-year-old was recklessly handling a firearm and pointed it at Jalen. The weapon discharged, and a single bullet struck Jalen in the upper body.
Following the shooting, the 16-year-old suspect and another juvenile attempted to drive Jalen to a hospital for medical attention.
Their vehicle, however, broke down at the intersection of Harry and Doreen, about a block west of Rock Road. Emergency services were called to the location just before 1 p.m. Paramedics transported Jalen to a local hospital, but he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
The Wichita Police Department swiftly investigated the shooting and arrested the 16-year-old male suspect. He faced charges of second-degree murder and criminal possession of a firearm by a juvenile. The case was then handed over to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's Office for formal charges to be filed.
