In the early hours of September 22, 2020, a tragedy unfolded in Wichita, Kansas, that cut short the life of Jeremy Hutchens, a 42-year-old Black / African American man. Just after 3 a.m., police responded to a call of shots fired near the intersection of Newell and Edwards. Arriving at the scene, they discovered Hutchens inside a white Nissan Xterra, suffering from a gunshot wound to his upper body.
Despite the immediate response and life-saving efforts by fire and EMS personnel, he was pronounced dead at the scene. A woman who was in the vehicle with Hutchens at the time of the shooting was not physically harmed, although the assailant had also fired at her.
The investigation into the death of Jeremy Hutchens quickly revealed that this was not a random act of violence. Detectives determined that Hutchens had arranged to meet with 22-year-old Christian L. Wohlford for a property transaction. During this meeting, a disturbance broke out between the two men, which tragically escalated to Wohlford allegedly shooting Hutchens. The incident was a stark reminder of how quickly a seemingly ordinary transaction can turn fatal. Hutchens was remembered as a hardworking man with a specialty in sheetrock construction. Friends and family recalled him as an industrious and compassionate person, whose loss left a void in their lives.
Following the shooting, the Wichita Police Department swiftly identified a suspect. Christian L. Wohlford was apprehended later that same day during a traffic stop. He was subsequently booked into the Sedgwick County Adult Detention Facility on suspicion of second-degree murder, aggravated assault, and criminal possession of a firearm. It was also revealed that Wohlford had a history of felony convictions and was on parole with the Kansas Department of Corrections at the time of the incident.
