In the early moments of New Year's Day 2021, the life of 22-year-old Hispanic male Gabriel Campos-Torres tragically ended on a sidewalk in Wichita, Kansas. Just after midnight, authorities responded to a call about gunshots and discovered Campos-Torres's body in the 1200 block of South Ida. Initially, it appeared he had been shot, a belief that was shared with the public. He was found wearing only an undershirt, boxers, and socks.
However, a later autopsy would reveal a more brutal truth: there was no evidence of a gunshot wound. Instead, the cause of death was determined to be blunt force injuries to the torso, including a severe laceration to his liver that caused significant internal bleeding. His body was covered in bruises and other wounds, painting a grim picture of his final moments.
The investigation into the death of Campos-Torres, described by a neighbor as a "cheerful and inspiring" young man who was protective of his sister and helpful to those around him, soon uncovered a second crime scene at a home in the 1200 block of South Laura. This location was known to police as a site for gang-related activities. Evidence found at the house, including blood and a firearm, quickly led investigators to their first suspects. Siblings Noah and Isabel Martin, along with a 16-year-old boy, were among the first to be arrested in connection with the crime.
As the investigation deepened, a chilling narrative began to emerge. It is believed that Campos-Torres, who had been in communication with Isabel Martin via Facebook messages about joining a gang, was the victim of a gang initiation assault. He had been invited to a New Year's Eve gathering where gang members would be present. The address on South Laura was a known location for such violent initiations. The case expanded over time, and by July 2022, a total of six individuals faced charges related to the killing. The list of suspects grew to include the Martin siblings' father, Joshua Allen Martin, as well as Deccota W. Ivy-Shepherd, Hunter Remington Foster, and Kaiden James Washington. The charges against the group are extensive, including second-degree murder, recruiting criminal street gang members, and racketeering.
