In the early hours of a December morning in Wichita, Kansas, Randy Gibson, a 45-year-old Caucasian male, was in the process of moving out of his home on South Parkridge. It was approximately 12:45 a.m. on December 9, 2017, and he had enlisted the help of two friends to move his belongings. What began as a late-night move soon spiraled into a fatal encounter.
As Gibson and his friends, aged 31 and 22, worked to clear his possessions from the residence they shared with another man, a
disagreement escalated with his 21-year-old roommate, Jeremiah Mork. Mork produced a firearm and opened fire, striking Gibson. The gunfire didn't stop with Gibson; Mork also shot at his two friends who were on the porch of the house. Both of Gibson's friends were wounded in the chaotic scene that unfolded.
When Wichita police officers arrived at the home near Pawnee and 119th Street West, they heard gunshots coming from inside. One of Gibson's friends had already fled the scene and later sought medical attention at a hospital. The other friend was transported to a local hospital with two gunshot wounds to his leg. Inside the house, officers found Randy Gibson, who had succumbed to his injuries.
Jeremiah Mork was arrested at the scene without incident. He was subsequently booked into jail on suspicion of first-degree murder for the death of Randy Gibson, as well as two counts of aggravated battery for the shooting of the two other men, and one count of possession of a firearm by a felon. Mork's 38-year-old girlfriend was also present in the house during the shooting but was not physically harmed. Court proceedings later revealed that the motive for the shooting stemmed from a dispute after Mork's girlfriend had allowed Gibson to live with them in exchange for handyman services while Mork was in jail. Upon his release, Mork decided to evict Gibson, leading to the fatal confrontation.
