In the winter of 2018, the life of 20-year-old Ky Elliott Jones Jr. was cut short in a violent confrontation on a Saturday afternoon in Wichita, Kansas. The incident, which also resulted in the death of his 20-year-old companion, Jeremy R. Burdine, was not a straightforward case of murder, but rather one that authorities would ultimately deem a justifiable act of self-defense.
On January 8, 2018, Jones and Burdine went to a home in the 1500 block of West Merton.
An ongoing dispute over property had brought them to the residence of 18-year-old Skyler David Ryce. The situation escalated to the point where Jones and Burdine attempted to force their way into the house. From inside, Ryce responded by firing a weapon through the door, striking both men multiple times. When police arrived, they found Jones and Burdine in the yard with critical gunshot wounds. They were rushed to a local hospital but succumbed to their injuries. An autopsy would later reveal that Jones had been shot in the back, arms, and legs, while Burdine had been shot in the chest.
The investigation into the double homicide took an unusual turn when the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office reviewed the case. Based on the evidence, which indicated that Jones and Burdine were attempting to break into the home, prosecutors concluded that the shooter had acted in self-defense under Kansas' "stand your ground" law. As a result, Ryce was not charged in connection with the deaths of the two men.
Despite the self-defense ruling in the shooting, Ryce did not remain a free man. During the course of their investigation at the scene, police discovered stolen property inside his home. This led to his arrest on unrelated charges of burglary and criminal restraint. The property that was the subject of the initial dispute between the three men was reportedly not the same as the stolen items found in the house. The case highlighted a tragic end to a dispute between acquaintances, where one man's actions were deemed legally justified, while the lives of two others were lost.
