In the afternoon of November 14, 2016, the Bida Saigon restaurant in Wichita, Kansas, was the scene of a sudden and tragic event. Tan Van Vu, a 47-year-old male, was a frequent patron of the establishment, and on this day, he was inside the restaurant located in the 3800 block of East Harry. The atmosphere in the restaurant leading up to the incident was described as calm, with no apparent disturbances, arguments, or fights.
Another individual, 20-year-old Jonah Isaac Tausche, had been
inside the business for approximately two hours prior to the shooting. Witnesses reported that he was wandering around the pool hall area without interacting with anyone. For reasons that remain unclear, Tausche suddenly produced a weapon and fired a single shot, fatally wounding Tan Van Vu. The incident occurred around 1:30 p.m., and Vu was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after.
Law enforcement was called, and a suspect was taken into custody outside the restaurant shortly after the shooting. The individual arrested was Jonah Isaac Tausche. He was subsequently booked into the Sedgwick County Jail on suspicion of first-degree murder. According to the Wichita Police Department, their investigation indicated that there was no prior relationship between Tausche and Vu, and the motive for the shooting was not believed to be gang-related.
