In the early moments of October 12, 2024, a distressing call to 911 shattered the predawn quiet of a south Wichita apartment complex. The caller reported a shooting at the Emery Gardens Apartments on South Hydraulic, adding the chilling detail that children were present inside the residence where the violence erupted. Officers were dispatched to the scene at approximately 12:03 a.m.
Upon their arrival, they discovered a gravely wounded 30-year-old Hispanic male, Marco Antonio Gonzales-Arias, who had sustained a gunshot wound to his chest. He was rushed to a local hospital in critical condition, but tragically, he succumbed to his injuries at 3:07 a.m.
As the investigation into the fatal shooting began, details emerged about a chaotic and violent altercation. Police were also searching for a white Chevrolet Silverado that was seen leaving the area, reportedly carrying four individuals wearing masks. During the course of their investigation, authorities located another individual connected to the incident. Twenty-two-year-old Armando Martinez-Rodriguez had fled the apartment complex but was found with stab wounds. His injuries were determined to be non-life-threatening, and after receiving medical treatment, he was taken into custody.
Following his release from the hospital, Armando Martinez-Rodriguez was arrested and booked into the Sedgwick County Jail just before 7:30 p.m. on the same day as the shooting. He was charged with second-degree murder, characterized as unintentional but reckless, in connection with the death of Gonzales-Arias. A bond was set at $500,000, and his first court appearance was scheduled for October 28, 2024. While an arrest has been made, the specific circumstances that led to the deadly confrontation remain under investigation.
