In the early hours of June 17, 2020, a violent confrontation in Wichita, Kansas, brought a tragic end to the life of 53-year-old David Leddy, a White / Caucasian male. The events of that day began with a dispute between Leddy and a 19-year-old man at Leddy's home in the 1200 block of North Pinecrest. The altercation reportedly turned physical, with allegations that Leddy battered the young man and damaged his vehicle.
This initial conflict set the stage for a fatal escalation later that morning.
The 19-year-old's mother, Amber Ahrens, became aware of the incident and, accompanied by three friends, went to Leddy's residence. A heated argument erupted in front of the house. During this disturbance, Ahrens drew a revolver and fired a single shot, striking Leddy in the head. He was pronounced dead at the scene. In the immediate aftermath, Ahrens fled with a friend and disposed of the firearm in a vacant lot in an attempt to conceal her involvement.
Wichita police investigators worked the case, and their efforts led them to identify Amber Ahrens as the primary suspect. She was arrested approximately three weeks after the shooting, on July 7, 2020. Ahrens was subsequently charged with second-degree murder and criminal possession of a weapon by a convicted felon. She initially claimed self-defense, stating that Leddy had threatened her. However, she later pleaded guilty to the charges in November 2021. In February 2022, a judge sentenced Amber Ahrens to more than 16 years in prison for the shooting death of David Leddy, bringing a close to the legal proceedings in this fatal dispute.
