In the quiet neighborhood of the 1700 block of South Roanoke in Wichita, Kansas, the life of 35-year-old Brandon Walters, a Black male, was tragically cut short on March 3, 2016. An argument, fueled by drugs, escalated to a fatal confrontation inside his own home. His friend, 27-year-old Joshua Thomas, fired a single shot that struck Walters in the neck.
Despite the grievous wound, Walters managed to stumble out of his house before collapsing and dying in his front yard.
The dispute that led to the deadly encounter was reportedly over clothing and laundry, a mundane disagreement that spiraled into a senseless act of violence. A woman who witnessed the shooting provided an account to the authorities, detailing the argument that preceded the fatal shot. The incident highlighted the dangerous combination of narcotics and firearms, a point later emphasized by the defense attorney during legal proceedings. Both Walters and Thomas were said to be using narcotics at the time of the altercation.
Following the shooting, Joshua Thomas fled the scene, prompting a police search that culminated in an hours-long standoff near Kellogg and Edgemoor in April of that year. After his capture, Thomas was initially charged with second-degree murder. However, in November, he pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of voluntary manslaughter. The defense claimed that Walters had attacked Thomas with a knife before the shooting occurred.
In court, Brandon Walters' mother, Marcia Walters-Hardeman, delivered a heart-wrenching impact statement, describing her son's killing as a "willful and brutal act" and a "senseless crime." She spoke of the immense pain caused by her son's death, directly addressing Thomas and stating, "You shot to kill, to end a life. No warning, no accident. It was intentional and complete." In December 2016, a Sedgwick County judge sentenced Joshua Thomas to six years and five months in prison for the voluntary manslaughter of Brandon Walters. An additional 26-month sentence for a conviction of methamphetamine possession was ordered to be served consecutively.
