Donald Williams was a 13-year-old boy from Wichita, Kansas, described by those who knew him as a wonderful son, brother, and friend. A student at Curtis Middle School, he was remembered as funny, loving, and outgoing. His absence was deeply felt by classmates, who said the school halls were quiet after he was gone.
On Halloween night, October 31, 2024, Donald was out trick-or-treating and was just minutes away from his home when his life was tragically taken.
A large crowd had gathered in the parking lot of a QuikTrip near the intersection of Central and Oliver when a disturbance broke out. Someone opened fire into the crowd, and Donald was shot. He was taken to a local hospital by private vehicle but died from his injuries a short time later. A second teenager, a 15-year-old boy, was also wounded in the shooting, sustaining a gunshot to his leg.
The Wichita Police Department’s investigation quickly led to an arrest. Authorities took 19-year-old Carrice Profit into custody and charged her with first-degree murder, aggravated assault, and criminal discharge of a firearm. Police also identified a second suspect, Profit’s 19-year-old cousin, Jermall Campbell, and began a search for him.
In the wake of the shooting, Donald’s community came together to mourn his death and call for an end to such violence. Friends and family held a balloon release at the QuikTrip to honor his memory. A representative from a local violence prevention initiative spoke at the gathering, saying, “We can’t survive in this world without each other and we go to stop taking each out out, especially over words.”
Jermall Campbell was eventually apprehended. In July 2026, Campbell, then 21, was convicted of first-degree murder for his role in Donald’s death. A judge sentenced him to life in prison, with eligibility for parole after 25 years. He was also found guilty of aggravated assault and criminal discharge of a firearm. As of July 2026, Carrice Profit had posted a $200,000 bond in February 2025 and was awaiting trial, which was scheduled for the end of August 2026.
