In the early morning hours of Independence Day, a violent confrontation in southeast Wichita left 49-year-old Shay Prewitt, a White/Caucasian male, dead from a gunshot wound. The incident, which unfolded around 1:30 a.m. on July 4, 2021, also resulted in non-life-threatening gunshot injuries to a 36-year-old man and a 14-year-old boy.

The tragic chain of events reportedly began when a woman asked Prewitt and the 36-year-old man for assistance with another man. Their subsequent confrontation with this individual escalated into a physical altercation. At some point during the fight, a handgun was produced, and shots were fired. When police arrived at the scene in the 2200 block of S. Glendale, they discovered Prewitt deceased in a driveway outside of a parked vehicle. The two other victims were transported to a local hospital for treatment and were later released.

Following an investigation into the deadly shooting, the Wichita Police Department announced that they were not searching for any additional suspects. While the events leading to the shooting involved a clear dispute, authorities have not publicly identified the individual who fired the shots, and no arrests have been announced in connection with Prewitt's death. The case is not currently being pursued with any active suspects at large.
