Emmitt Lee Olson, a 40-year-old White / Caucasian male, was shot and killed on April 17, 2018, in Wichita, Kansas. The incident occurred in a house located in the 2900 block of South Sayles in the Planeview neighborhood, an area known to law enforcement for drug-related activities. On the afternoon of the shooting, more than six people were present in the home, which police had previously visited in connection with drug use.
The shooting happened during a conflict that arose from an
attempted methamphetamine deal. During the altercation, Randy G. Trimmell, who was 28 years old at the time, pulled out a handgun and fired a single shot, which struck Olson in the chest. When police arrived at the scene, they found Emmitt Lee Olson deceased inside the residence. The individual who initially reported the shooting to the authorities had already left the scene by the time officers arrived.
Initially, investigators were uncertain about the motive behind the shooting and no suspects were immediately identified. However, their investigation eventually led to Randy G. Trimmell. Prosecutors initially charged Trimmell with second-degree murder. He later pleaded no contest to a lesser charge of voluntary manslaughter. In his defense, Trimmell's lawyer argued that Olson had been an aggressor or participant in the criminal activity that resulted in his death. In January 2021, Trimmell was sentenced to 107 months in prison for the killing.
