On what should have been a joyous day of celebration, the life of 27-year-old Black/African American male Dwayne Brunson was tragically cut short. On March 18, 2018, the day of his youngest son's third birthday, Brunson was in Wichita, Kansas, to partake in the NCAA tournament festivities and celebrate St. Patrick's Day with friends. The group ended up at Deuces Bar on North Arkansas, where an altercation would ultimately lead to Brunson's untimely death.
In the early morning hours,
around 2 a.m., a dispute broke out inside the club. One account suggests the conflict began after Brunson allegedly disrespected a female patron. The argument escalated to violence, and gunfire erupted. Brunson was struck by multiple bullets. He was rushed to a local hospital, but despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries around 8 a.m. that morning. The day that was meant for his son's birthday party instead became a day of mourning for his family.
The investigation into Dwayne Brunson's homicide was immediately hampered by a lack of cooperation from witnesses. Though many people were present at Deuces Bar at the time of the shooting, few remained to provide statements to the Wichita Police Department. This reluctance to come forward, combined with the absence of security footage from the establishment, created significant obstacles for law enforcement. As a result, the motive for the shooting remains unclear, and it has not been determined if Brunson was the intended target.
To this day, no arrests have been made in connection with Dwayne Brunson's death, and the case has grown cold. The identity of the person or persons responsible for his murder remains unknown.
