Joseph Florence, a 16-year-old Black/African American male, found his life tragically cut short on the summer evening of July 17, 2021, in Wichita, Kansas. The night was shattered by violence when a dispute, reportedly over a girl, escalated into a fatal confrontation at his home in the 2600 block of North Piatt.
The events of that night unfolded when two individuals, later identified as 20-year-old Tyler Eugene Kelly and another 16-year-old male, arrived at Florence's residence with the
intent to confront him. A fight broke out, and in the ensuing chaos, multiple gunshots were fired. When police responded to reports of a burglary in progress and an injured person around 9:50 p.m., they discovered Joseph Florence in a driveway, suffering from fatal gunshot wounds. He was rushed to a local hospital, but his injuries proved too severe, and he was pronounced dead. The investigation revealed that all three individuals involved in the altercation sustained gunshot wounds.
The investigation into Joseph Florence's death led to the swift arrests of the two individuals who had gone to his home that night. Tyler Eugene Kelly was arrested on suspicion of first-degree murder and aggravated assault. The other 16-year-old was also taken into custody on suspicion of felony murder. The subsequent legal proceedings brought a measure of justice for Joseph's family. In September 2023, a Sedgwick County judge sentenced Tyler Kelly to 25 years to life in prison for first-degree murder, with additional time for aggravated burglary and aggravated assault. His juvenile accomplice was also convicted and sentenced within the juvenile justice system.
