In the early morning hours of April 10, 2014, a series of events unfolded in Wichita, Kansas, that would end in the death of 30-year-old David M. Zehring, a Caucasian male. The initial encounter was seemingly minor. Shortly before 2:30 a.m., Zehring used a flashlight to get the attention of a Wichita police officer. When the officer approached, Zehring inquired about his name and badge number.
The officer decided to pull over to speak with him further, but Zehring drove away, prompting the officer to follow.
What began as a simple traffic stop quickly escalated into a high-speed chase through the city streets, with speeds reaching up to 75 miles per hour. The pursuit ended in the 200 block of South Mt. Carmel, where the final, fatal confrontation occurred. After stopping his vehicle, Zehring emerged and approached a Sedgwick County sheriff's deputy while brandishing a knife. The officers on the scene attempted to subdue him using non-lethal force, deploying a Taser. However, the device proved ineffective. A second deputy also discharged a Taser, which again failed to stop Zehring's advance.
As Zehring continued to move toward the deputy with the knife, the Wichita police officer fired his weapon multiple times, striking Zehring. He was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. An autopsy later confirmed that Zehring died from multiple gunshot wounds. Toxicology reports indicated that he was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the incident.
In the aftermath of the shooting, the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office conducted a review of the incident, a standard procedure for officer-involved shootings. The investigation concluded that the officer's use of deadly force was justified. The District Attorney's report stated that the officer reasonably believed Zehring posed an imminent lethal threat to the deputy. Consequently, no charges were filed against the officers involved, and no arrests were made. David Zehring was remembered by his family as a kind and gentle person with a great sense of humor.
