On a warm September evening in a quiet Wichita neighborhood, a dispute between neighbors escalated into a tragedy that claimed the life of 48-year-old Brian Baker. The incident unfolded on September 12, 2025, in the 900 block of South Vassar Avenue, where Baker, a father of five, was enjoying the evening playing football with his children and other neighborhood kids in the street.
The fatal confrontation had its roots in an argument a few days prior, on September 9, when Baker confronted
his neighbor, 38-year-old Allan Gunneson III, about his driving speed in the neighborhood after Gunneson reportedly swerved to avoid Baker's daughter on her bike. Tensions flared, with both men exchanging heated words. On the evening of the shooting, as children played, Gunneson drove through the area. Another argument ensued, quickly escalating to a physical altercation.
According to witness accounts and neighborhood surveillance footage, Baker approached Gunneson's vehicle. There was a struggle, and according to Gunneson's statement to the police, he felt threatened. He then fired multiple shots, striking Baker in the torso. Neighbors who witnessed the event described a frantic scene.
Wichita police arrived to find Baker in a front yard with multiple gunshot wounds. He was transported to a local hospital but was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. Gunneson surrendered to the police at the scene and was taken into custody for questioning. He was later arrested and charged with voluntary manslaughter and aggravated assault. He was booked into the Sedgwick County Jail and was later released on a $150,000 bond. The case is set to be presented to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's Office.
