Braekwon Eugene JaQur Bennett, a 22-year-old African American male, was fatally shot on the evening of Monday, November 1, 2021, in Wichita, Kansas. Around 5:30 p.m., police were called to an apartment in the 300 block of West 10th Street North, where they discovered Bennett suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was urgently transported to a local hospital, but tragically, he was pronounced dead.
The investigation that followed revealed that the incident was not a random act of violence, as it was believed that Bennett knew the individuals who shot him.
The events leading to Bennett's death began when two male suspects, aged 17 and 18, arrived at the apartment and confronted him. An altercation ensued, which quickly escalated to the point where multiple shots were fired. During the confrontation, the 18-year-old suspect was also shot. Following the shooting, both suspects fled the scene.
Later, the two suspects showed up at an area hospital seeking medical attention for the 18-year-old's injuries. At the hospital, police made contact with the 17-year-old, who attempted to flee from the officers but was apprehended and taken into custody. He was subsequently booked into the Juvenile Detention Facility on a charge of first-degree murder. The 18-year-old suspect remained hospitalized for his gunshot wound and was set to be booked into jail upon his release. Authorities confirmed that they were not searching for any other suspects in connection with the case.
