In a heart-wrenching turn of events on the evening of February 19, 2024, a one-year-old Black/African American male named Taidyn Anderson lost his life in a burst of gunfire that pierced the walls of a Wichita, Kansas, apartment. The young boy, also known as Blaire Jobe, was cradled in his mother's arms inside their residence at the Sugar Creek Apartments when the targeted attack unfolded.
Multiple rounds, estimated to be around 16, were fired from a handgun into the apartment, striking the infant twice in the head. The violence of that moment also left two 24-year-old women, including Taidyn's mother, with critical but non-life-threatening injuries. Others present in the apartment, a 24-year-old man and two other young children, a 5-year-old girl and a 10-month-old girl, were physically unharmed but thrust into the midst of a tragedy.
The investigation that followed the fatal shooting moved swiftly, with Wichita police detectives working diligently to unravel the circumstances and identify those responsible for the senseless act. Their efforts, which included following up on leads, utilizing technology, and executing search warrants, led to the identification of three suspects. The incident was not random; police described it as a "targeted event" stemming from a domestic dispute. The investigation revealed that the mother of the young victim had recently ended a romantic relationship with one of the suspects due to allegations of abuse, a breakup he was unwilling to accept. The conflict had reportedly escalated in the week leading up to the shooting, culminating in a confrontation and threats made by the ex-boyfriend at the apartment complex just before the fatal shots were fired.
Within days, authorities arrested three individuals in connection with the murder of Taidyn Anderson. The suspects were identified as 25-year-old K'veion Darnell Richard, the ex-boyfriend of Taidyn's mother; 21-year-old Jonathan Tillery-Matthias; and a 17-year-old. All three were charged with first-degree murder and criminal discharge of a firearm. At the time of the incident, Richard was on parole for several offenses, including criminal discharge of a firearm and aggravated assault, while Tillery-Matthias was on pre-trial supervision for a separate firearm-related charge. K'veion Richard was later convicted by a jury of first-degree murder, two counts of aggravated battery, two counts of criminal discharge of a firearm, and criminal threat. He was subsequently sentenced to life in prison and will not be eligible for parole for more than 54 years. The other two men charged in Taidyn's death, Jonathan Tillery-Matthias and the teenager, who was to be tried as an adult, were awaiting their court proceedings.
