On the evening of March 21, 2024, a burst of violence in a smoke shop parking lot in Wichita, Kansas, cut short the life of 20-year-old Jaden Wilson, a Black male. Wilson was sitting in his girlfriend's car in the 2200 block of North Grove when the attack occurred around 5:30 p.m. A minivan pulled up, and a former friend of Wilson's, a 17-year-old, emerged with a gun. He walked to the car, shouted, and then fired numerous shots through the windshield and passenger door at Wilson.
His girlfriend, who was in the driver's seat, was a witness to the harrowing event. Wilson was struck multiple times in his upper body and, despite the immediate arrival of police who were flagged down and performed CPR, he was pronounced dead at the scene just minutes later.
The investigation into Wilson's death moved swiftly, thanks in large part to the witness account from his girlfriend which helped police quickly identify the shooter. The primary suspect, the 17-year-old, voluntarily surrendered to law enforcement at the Sedgwick County Jail a short time after the shooting. The motive for the killing appeared to stem from an ongoing dispute, with the teen later claiming that Wilson had robbed him at some point in the past. The investigation soon revealed a second suspect, the teenager's 41-year-old father, Tyree Jackson Sr., who had driven his son to the smoke shop. Surveillance footage reportedly showed the father gesturing for his son to approach Wilson's vehicle.
Both father and son faced serious charges for their roles in the death of Jaden Wilson. The 17-year-old, Tyree Jackson Jr., was charged as an adult with first-degree murder, criminal discharge of a firearm, and criminal possession of a weapon. His father, Tyree Jackson Sr., was initially charged with first-degree murder and criminal discharge of a firearm. In November 2024, the elder Jackson pleaded guilty to an amended charge of second-degree reckless murder and was subsequently sentenced to more than 12 years in prison for his involvement in the fatal shooting that ended a young man's life over an alleged past dispute.
