On a tragic spring evening in Wichita, Kansas, the life of 17-year-old Leon McClennon, a Black/African American male, was cut short. On May 9, 2015, the West High School student was attending a private birthday party in the basement of a venue at 1719 S. Hillside. He was an innocent bystander, uninvolved in the conflict that would ultimately lead to his death.
With no criminal history, McClennon was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time when a dispute between two other men at the party escalated with deadly consequences.
The argument grew heated, and one of the men involved, Grover D. James, pulled out a handgun and fired. A stray bullet struck Leon McClennon in the head. He died from his injuries at the scene shortly before 3 a.m. In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, Wichita police identified a person of interest, noting that while the individual was a documented gang member, the argument itself did not appear to be gang-related.
The investigation into Leon McClennon's senseless death led to the arrest of Grover D. James. He was subsequently charged and convicted of first-degree premeditated murder and criminal possession of a firearm. During his trial, James admitted to firing two shots but maintained that he did not intend to hit anyone. However, witness testimony contradicted his claim, indicating that the shooting was a deliberate act. Surveillance footage from the basement showed James entering the area with McClennon and other partygoers, and later walking past McClennon's collapsed body after the shots were fired.
Ultimately, a jury found Grover D. James guilty of the murder of Leon McClennon. For this senseless act of violence that claimed the life of a young man with a promising future, James was sentenced to a hard 50 life sentence for the murder, along with a concurrent 21-month sentence for the firearm possession charge. James later filed appeals claiming newly discovered evidence and ineffective assistance of counsel, but these were denied by the district court and the Kansas Supreme Court affirmed those decisions.
