In the winter of 2015, on the first of December in Wichita, Kansas, the life of 24-year-old Brenton Oliver was tragically cut short in a burst of gunfire. Oliver, a male, was visiting a home in the 2500 block of East Mossman when a violent altercation erupted in the front yard. This confrontation, rooted in what police would later describe as a gang-related dispute, escalated with fatal consequences.
Brenton Oliver was not the only victim that day.
Alongside him, 55-year-old Betty Ann Holloman was also killed. Holloman, who lived at the residence, was an innocent bystander, caught in the crossfire while standing near her own front porch. Oliver sustained gunshot wounds to the chest and stomach and was rushed to a hospital where he later died from his injuries. The brazen violence of the act, which claimed two lives, marked the city's 29th and 30th homicides of the year.
The investigation into the double homicide led to the identification of four suspects. In the days and weeks that followed, authorities arrested Jonathan Carter, 19, Brent Carter, 24, Jamion Wimbley, 19, and Quincy Carter, 25. Police confirmed that Jonathan and Brent Carter were not related. The four men were subsequently charged with first-degree murder in connection with the deaths of Oliver and Holloman.
The legal proceedings revealed that the shooting was the culmination of a gang feud. All four men were ultimately convicted for their roles in the double homicide. Brent Carter and Quincy Carter are now serving life sentences. Following a jury conviction, Johnathan Carter was also sentenced to life in prison. Jamion Wimbley, the last of the four to be convicted, was found guilty of two counts of first-degree murder and sentenced for his part in the deadly shooting.
