In the quiet afternoon of May 15, 2016, a burst of violence shattered the peace in Garden City, Kansas, claiming the life of 22-year-old Richard "Richie" Raymond Lyons, a White/Caucasian male. Lyons, a lifelong resident of the community, was discovered in his vehicle in the 5800 block of East Mansfield Road, having suffered a fatal gunshot wound. The incident, which occurred around 3 p.m., prompted a swift response from the Finney County Sheriff's Department.
The investigation quickly
led authorities to a nearby residence where two suspects were located. A brief standoff ensued before law enforcement successfully took both individuals into custody. The men were identified as Felix Sanchez and Rodolfo Garcia. Both were initially arrested on suspicion of first-degree murder and held in the Finney County Jail without bond.
In the days that followed, the Finney County Attorney's Office formally charged 19-year-old Felix Sanchez with first-degree murder in connection with Lyons' death. However, at that time, charges were not filed against the second suspect, 20-year-old Rodolfo Garcia, with the prosecutor's office citing a need for further investigation to gather sufficient evidence. The community was left to mourn the loss of a young man who was remembered as an active Boy Scout in his youth and a father to a young son. Funeral services were held at the Bible Christian Church, followed by his burial at Valley View Cemetery.
