The life of Brayden Becker, a 23-year-old White man, ended violently during a home invasion in Garden City, Kansas, on July 16, 2025. The fatal encounter unfolded in the early morning at the Continental Apartments on West Buffalo Jones Avenue.
Around 5:30 a.m., residents inside the apartment heard a loud banging at the front door. Witnesses told police that when Becker approached and opened the door slightly, multiple individuals forced their way inside the residence.
In the chaos that followed, Becker was shot. The assailants then fled the scene. Two other young men in the apartment, ages 19 and 17, were also wounded by gunfire.
A private vehicle rushed Becker and the 17-year-old victim to St. Catherine Hospital, while Finney County EMS transported the 19-year-old. After their arrival, the hospital was placed on lockdown as a precaution. All three victims were subsequently transferred to a hospital in Wichita for more advanced care. Despite medical efforts, Brayden Becker died from his injuries. The other two victims were reported to be in serious to critical condition.
An investigation by the Garden City Police Department quickly led to the identification of three suspects. Authorities arrested 19-year-old Michael Lara, 16-year-old Ivan Lara, and 15-year-old Isaac Lara. The three were taken into custody and lodged in adult and juvenile detention facilities. Investigators stated they did not believe the shooting was a random act.
In September 2026, the case saw a significant development in court. Michael David Lara, then 20 years old, was sentenced to more than 15 years in prison for attempted first-degree murder in connection with the shooting that killed Brayden Becker. As of that month, there was no public confirmation on whether the other two teens arrested, who were 15 and 16 at the time of the incident, would be charged.
